Cathay Pacific Flight Experiences Mid-Air Engine Failure

A Cathay Pacific flight en route from Hong Kong to Milan was forced to divert to Lanzhou due to an engine failure, according to sources from the South China Morning Post. The incident occurred approximately 4.5 hours after takeoff, prompting immediate action from the flight crew.

Emergency Diversion to Lanzhou After Engine Malfunction

Flight CX233 departed from Hong Kong at 12:50 AM on Thursday and was scheduled to arrive at Milan’s Malpensa Airport at 7:40 AM local time. However, the flight crew detected a failure in the aircraft’s left engine mid-journey and promptly requested a diversion.

Despite suggestions from ground control to reroute to Chengdu, the crew insisted on diverting to Lanzhou. The Cathay Pacific Boeing 777 safely landed at Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport at 5:35 AM after jettisoning approximately 55 tonnes of fuel to ensure a safe landing.

Following the emergency landing, Cathay Pacific swiftly arranged an alternative flight for affected passengers, ensuring their journey to Milan continued with minimal disruption. The airline has yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the engine failure.
