The video, published by the “Ride with Gabi” channel, referred to the area as a “Myanmar slum in Phuket,” sparking debate and concern.
The Reality of the Myanmar Community in Phuket
The video showcased a densely populated Myanmar community in Phuket, where many migrant workers reside. These individuals pay approximately 3,600 baht per month for rent, including utilities. The community includes a school operated by a Myanmar national, offering free education, meals, and air-conditioned classrooms for the children of workers.
However, Sister Lakana Sukhsuchit, director of the Good Shepherd Sisters Thailand’s center in Phuket, firmly stated that the area is not a slum. She explained that the Myanmar population in Phuket consists primarily of fishermen who live close to the sea for work. “This is not a slum; it is simply a fishing community,” she clarified.
Education and Support for the Myanmar Community in Phuket
The Good Shepherd Sisters have been actively supporting the Myanmar community in Phuket for over a decade. Their center provides essential services, with an educational focus on helping children integrate into Thai society.
Last year, the school registered 395 students, aged between 5 and 17, mostly from Myanmar, including Mon and Karen ethnic groups. Many of these students originate from Dawei, a port city in Myanmar. The curriculum includes Thai language instruction to facilitate integration into Thai schools, alongside Burmese and English classes.
Government Oversight and Community Efforts
Reports suggest that the viral video has raised security concerns among Thai authorities. As a result, local officials have been visiting the Myanmar community in Phuket to assess the situation.
Sister Lakana emphasized that her organization aims to ensure that migrant children receive proper education and moral guidance. “We strive to help these children grow into responsible individuals who contribute positively to society,” she stated.
